At the February 17th Board of Education meeting, Nicole, McKayla, and Jaelyn presented work they are doing as part the Equity and Diversity Committee alongside Khawla Hijawi, DACC's EL Student Liaison. The students shared that among the many reasons they joined the committee, one reason is to ensure that every student is treated equally and with respect.
With the support of Ms. Hijawi and district staff, the committee has infused the district with acceptance and inclusion by creating events that celebrate diversity, making daily announcements that encourage acts of kindness, establishing monthly themes to acknowledge diversity, and they have worked with DACC administration to create an enhanced name change process for students.
A visual representation of their work can be seen in the hallway where they have established a Kindness Tree – an ongoing and growing celebration of kind acts.
We appreciate what these students are doing for our district and for each other. The DACC Board of Education congratulated them on their bravery for standing up for what is right and being leaders in their school.
