The women of DACC are helping us break gender stereotypes. Here are their stories.
As a sophomore, La’Maya visited DACC on an exploratory mission. She was determined to find something that sparked her interest and would provide opportunities for her future. She considered Engineering, Wildlife, and the Automotive programs. According to La’Maya, “Sometimes you just have to find your passion.”
Eventually landing in Automotive Collision Technology, La’Maya has found her passion in automotive repair. “I enjoy everything about it – the painting, the welding, the repairs. It’s all new to me and I’m just absorbing everything.”
She has plans to continue her education after high school to pursue a degree in auto mechanics. She’s looking forward to digging into the inner workings of vehicles and building engines.
As the only girl in the Automotive Collision program, La’Maya was intimidated at first. It didn’t take long, though, to figure out that they already have something in common, she explained.
As one of December’s Students of the Month, La’Maya has become a role model for her three younger sisters. She is serving as an example that they can also set high goals for themselves and follow the path less taken to achieve them. La’Maya is looking forward to having one of her sisters in the Wildlife program next year.
