After graduating from Delaware Hayes High School and completing DACC’s Welding & Sheet Metal Fabrication program in 2018, Nick Smoke set his sights on a career in the skilled trades. He joined the UA Local 189 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union apprenticeship, and in August 2023, proudly completed the five-year program to become a journeyman pipefitter.
Today, Nick works for Farber Mechanical out of Local 189, traveling around Columbus and the surrounding areas as a pipe welder on gas lines and other process piping projects. “I’m glad I chose to join Local 189 as they have given me everything I need to be successful and provide a great life for my family,” Nick shared.
Nick credits his time at DACC for giving him the confidence to launch into his career. “DACC helped me with my interview and public speaking skills so that I could professionally and confidently enter the workforce,” he said.
For current and future DACC students, Nick offers this advice: “Put your head down and strive to be the best possible version of yourself. There’s no such thing as too much practice, especially when it comes to honing your skills in your trade.”
Nick’s story is a powerful reminder of how DACC programs not only equip students with technical expertise but also with the professional skills needed to thrive in their careers.
