Girl Scout Troop 5225 outreach

Four DACC students took time after school Monday to meet and work with second graders from Girl Scout Troop 5225 at Olentangy Meadows Elementary.

The DACC students -- all girls -- hailed from programs such as App Development & Programming, Biotechnology, and Welding & Sheet Metal Fabrication. They are pursuing careers in the information technology, medical and engineering/manufacturing fields.

They shared their stories and led hands-on activities related to their labs, introducing the Girl Scouts to math- and science-related careers and helping them earn their STEM badges along the way.

“It’s not just about meeting the requirements for the badge. ..." said Harini Anantoji, a senior from Olentangy Berlin in DACC's App Development & Programming lab. "Something that I think is really important for the Girl Scouts to know is that although these are male-dominated industries, there are many females who have contributed to the mass-building of such industries."

"I hope the Girl Scouts learned that they are just as capable as anyone to pursue a STEM career,” added Maxine Rojas-Bruno, a junior from Olentangy Orange in DACC’s Biotechnology lab. “Even if they aren't interested in STEM, I hope they gained confidence as young girls to live out and work towards their dreams."

Troop 5225 will visit DACC in March, when the Scouts will have the opportunity to earn their Coding Badge. DACC is proud to partner with community organizations like Girl Scout Troop 5225 to engage young learners in Delaware County in critical career exploration.
