DACC/Dempsey Middle School Students Give Back

October 23, 2012

For the second year in a row, DACC/Demspey Middle School students in Nicki Wright’s class held what has become the annual building-wide service projects with SHARE to stitch together sleeping bags for the homeless of Ohio. Many of these bags will be taken to Columbus shelters and be gone within a week due to the overwhelming amount of homeless men and women in need of something warm to sleep in during these cold months.

Last year, the students made 24 sleeping bags and set out to beat that record this year, ending the week with a total of 27 sleeping bags.

IMG_1033Sierra Sidders, Jaylynn Coffman, Alek Sawyer, and Ashley Penhorwood shared some of their experiences with the project. As part of the leadership process, they made posters and announcements in the school to encourage staff and students to volunteer their time. They also encouraged everyone to make donations for the supplies. Clean, used blankets and men's neckties are needed to make the sleeping bags. SHARE makes hygiene kits for the homeless which includes: soap, baby wipes, Q-tips, combs, new socks, shampoo, and deodorant.

Donna Immel is the Founder of SHARE in Delaware.
