DACC Students Compete to Give

March 12, 2013

Nothing spurs Delaware Area Career Center students into action like a healthy competition. So when the DACC North Campus Social Committee launched the first annual donation drive for the Humane Society of Delaware County, teachers and students immediately crafted their strategies. The grand prize they were competing for was a pizza party for the winning class, sponsored by DACC’s North Campus Social Committee. Much more important to these students, though, is knowing that they gave back to their community and, of course, bragging rights.

The Fire Service, Cosmetology, and Career Graphics classes were neck and neck for most of the donation drive. Just when the Cosmetology students thought they had won, the Fire Service class came in on the last day with a cart full of donations. As Ms. Ames, the Cosmetology Instructor explained, “We showed our cards too early. The Fire Service class knew how much we had collected and they were determined to outdo us. All in all, though, it’s for a good cause and we’re thrilled to be able to give these items to the Humane Society.”

Donations, totaling more than 450 items, included dog and cat food, cleaning supplies, leashes, cat litter, bedding, and crates. In order to help get everyone into the spirit of giving, a promotional display was created by Jim Beck’s Career Graphics class where students could keep an eye on the competition throughout the week. After the winners were declared, the items were delivered to the Humane Society of Delaware County on March 11th by DACC Instructor, John Wolfe, and student volunteers.
