What kind of student attends the Career Center?

Times have changed and most professions require advanced training and education. 60% of our students go on to college. Many of our students also go on to nationally ranked trade schools. A number of our programs prepare students to make better college major choices, and some offer post secondary options. That means our students can earn college credit while still in high school. Students who are interested in earning college credit while still in high school should look for the programs marked “Tech Prep.” We also offer a wide variety of certifications so students can work at the entry level in their fields immediately after high school while they are getting the advanced training they need. Finally, some of our programs offer job skills training so students can start a career immediately after high school.

What are classes like at the Career Center?

Our students learn through project-based assignments and real-world experiences. Although teachers use some of the class time to lecture and teach concepts and procedures students need to know, students spend most of their time in the labs learning by doing. The teachers work one-on-one with the students as mentors and guides. Students also work with the same technology the professionals use in their respective fi elds. The best way to see what a class at the Career Center looks like is to visit it. Call Karen Martin (740.201.3224) or Lisa Riegel (740.201.3233) to schedule a tour or observation.

How does attending the Career Center benefit me?

First, many of the programs offer certifi cations that can help you be more competitive. Our students have an edge because they have experience. Even if students choose not to pursue a career using the skills they learn at the Career Center, they can obtain better jobs during college to pay their tuition. Second, our students have opportunities to participate in internships and apprenticeships. The apprenticeship program allows students to earn as they learn. These opportunities help students network and form critical relationships with people who can help open doors later on.

Can I still play sports and participate in extra-curricular activities if I attend the Career Center?

The Delaware Area Career Center serves over 750 high school students from 10 different high schools. We have many athletes, musicians and active club members. Your day here will end earlier than most of the local high schools, so you can get to practice and meetings on time. Our instructors value your outside interests and work with you when you need to leave class for athletic or extra-curricular commitments.

Will I still graduate with my friends?

YES! Think of the Career Center as an elective program your school offers. We are partners and our program is an extension of the choices you have at your home school. You will still earn your HOME SCHOOL DIPLOMA when you graduate, but you will also receive a Career Passport documenting the successful completion of your Career Center program. You can also leave the Career Center with certifi cations and/or college credit. More importantly, you are prepared for college or the workforce through the hands on experiences you have at the career center.

Is the Career Center a good reputable option?

98% of our students attain their high school diploma.
94% of our graduates are employed, attending college or serving in the military.
Of those graduates, 60% are currently attending college.
We are nationally recognized and ranked #1 in total percentage points on state performance measures out of the 49 Ohio career center schools.

What if I am not ready to leave my friends?

You are not leaving your friends. You can still attend your regular high school for half the school day. You can also still attend all the social and sporting events at your school. Best of all, you will meet new friends at the career center who share your interests. Many of our students become life long friends because their friendships are based on mutual interests and goals. Many of our students say that although they kept their old friends when they came to the Career Center, they met their best friends here.
