FAQ for parents of prospective students.
Isn’t the Career Center for kids who do not plan to attend college?
- Not anymore. The old JVS model has evolved to the point that the stereotypes we associate with a JVS are simply untrue today. In fact, over 60% of our students go on to college. Many of our students also go on to nationally ranked trade schools. Also, students in many of our programs have the ability to earn college credit while still in high school.
How is the Career Center education different than a regular high school?
- Our students learn through project-based assignments and real-world experiences.
They work with up-to-date technology and actual clients.
For example:
- Our welding students actually engineer products for clients, create them in a Solidworks program which allows them to see them in 3D, and then present them to the customer for approval before actually creating them.
- Our Teacher Academy students and Early Childhood Education students work in actual classrooms with mentor teachers. They create and teach the lessons to students.
- Our Construction Technologies students, Electrical Technologies students and Landscape and Turf Grass Management students partner with Creative Housing to actually build a home for a special needs client .
What added value does a student receive by attending the career center?
- First, many of the programs offer certifications that can help students be more competitive. Our students have an edge because they have experience. Even if students choose not to pursue a career using the skills they learn at the Career Center, they can obtain better jobs during college to help ease the financial burden of higher education.
- Second, our students have opportunities to participate in internships and apprenticeships. The apprenticeship program allows students to earn as they learn. These opportunities help students network and form critical relationships with people who can help open doors later on.
What if my child plays sports or participates in extra-curricular activities?
- The Delaware Area Career Center serves over 750 high school students from 10 different high schools. We have many athletes, musicians and active club members. Because our students’ day ends earlier than the area high schools, students have no problem getting back to their home schools for practices or games. Our instructors value the students’ outside interests and work with them when they need to leave class for athletic or extra-curricular commitments.
What does my child earn when he/she completes the program?
- Think of the Career Center as an elective program your school offers. We are partners and our program is an extension of the choices students have in their home schools. Your child will still earn his/her HOME SCHOOL DIPLOMA. Our students also earn a career passport documenting their successful completion of their Career Center program. They also have the opportunity to earn many certifications and/or college credit as a result of successfully completing their program. More importantly, our students are prepared for college or the workforce through their hands on experiences they receive while they are at the career center.
How do I know the Delaware Area Career Center is a reputable career center?
- 98% of our students attain their high school diploma.
- 94% of our graduates are employed, attending college or serving in the military.
- Of that group of graduates, 60% are currently attending college.
- The Delaware Area Career Center also earned national distinction as one of 75 high schools in the National Successful Schools Network, an initiative of the International Center for Leadership in Education.
- We also rank #1 in total percentage points on state performance measures out of the 49 Ohio career center schools.
