Delaware Area Career Center hosts its annual Student Parent Welcome
On Thursday, August 16, the Delaware Area Career Center staff, administration and faculty will welcome students and parents at kick-off dinners at both campuses. From 5pm to 8pm, students and parents will be treated to sloppy joes, pasta salad, chips and cookies before they are invited to tour the building, meet the staff, and pick up their schedules for this year’s school year. The evening will focus on the theme, Explore, Experience, Excel.
The Delaware Area Career Center also welcomes several new employees. In order to accomodate the students’ diverse needs, they have hired five interpreters: Kristin Dobbins, Lindsay Gentile, Amanda Grayson, Kristi Hill and Sarah Moeder. Todd German will join the Fire Program as an instructor, and Jill Kurpyl will join the cosmetology faculty. Kathy Cremeans joins the north campus staff as a Library Media Specialist. Bob Thomas will direct the Career Based Intervention at Big Walnut. Finally, Lisa Riegel will take over for Darlene Greenwood who retired as the Community Relations Coordinator for the district.
The Board of Education welcomes back the entire staff with complementary breakfasts on their inservice days on Monday, August 20th and Tuesday, August 21st. The staff has a lot to celebrate. Enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year has increased by nearly 10 percent (from 773 at this time last year to 844 this year). DACC offers twenty seven programs in seven cluster areas: animal science and management, business and communications, construction center, health and safety services, human resources and services, manufacturing center, and transportation center.
This year, students will enjoy the renovations and new additions in the transportation, construction and manufacturing labs. The Career Center also expanded its CBIP program, Career Based Intervention Program, for sophomores by adding it to Buckeye Valley Schools. The Teacher Academy, a program for college bound seniors intent on studying education, is being offered not only at the Delaware Ohio State Campus, but also at Worthington Kilbourne High School. The first of many satellite locations for the program, said instructor Mary Lykens. The adult education program also explanded, adding upper level Microsoft certifi cations. Finally, the little ones in the preschool and daycare program will enjoy recess much more as they play on the brand-new playground equipment and mini safety town, complete with a gas station, a mailbox, and a drive-thru cafe.
The Delaware Area Career Center has also been recognized nationally by High Schools that Work. They received the Gold Improvement Award, an honor given to schools that had signifi cant improvement in mathematics, reading, and science from 2004 to 2006. DACC was one of only 19 high schools in the High Schools that Work network to receive the award. To earn the award, schools must have had 50 or more students complete the 2006 HSTW Assessment; participated in two assessments (2004 and 2006); not have greater than a 10 point change in the percentage of minority students or the percentage of students with a low parent education level from 2004 to 2006; met state Adequate Yearly Progress; not received an award in 2006; not received the Pacesetter recognition in 2007; and had statistically signifi cant gains in achievement (p < .05) in all three subject areas from 2004 to 2006.
