Delaware Area Career Center’s Teacher Academy hosts its first annual
Meet Your Mentor Tea at Worthington Kilbourne High School

August 2007

On Thursday, August 23rd, Mary Lykens, Teacher Academy instructor, and Connie Ball from the Worthington Education Center will team up to host the first annual Meet Your Mentor Tea at Worthington Kilbourne High School. The Teacher Academy is opening its fi rst satellite campus at Worthington Kilbourne this fall.

The tea will begin at 9:30 and last for one hour. Students will have a chance to meet their early childhood mentor teacher, hear about fi eld experience opportunities, and celebrate the beginning of a senior year that will be fi lled with teacher memories and career exploration.

The Teacher Academy, a Delaware Area Career Center program for college-bound seniors interested in a career in education, will be starting its inaugural year as a satellite at Worthington Kilbourne with 12 students (11 from WKHS and 1 from TWHS). This Academy offers these future teachers educational theory and principles of learning through classroom instruction at WKHS as well as field experiences in early childhood, middle childhood, and special needs classrooms in the district.

“We plan to put new meaning to senior year in high school—the three R’s now become rigor, relevance, and relationships. Academy students will be challenged to learn what it takes to be a master teacher, understand the requirements for licensure and certification, and network with district teachers who share their passion for teaching,” says Lykens.

College bound students are now finding the benefi ts of career-tech education. Where else in life can we “try on” a career to see if we are qualified for a profession? The WTA will give these students the up close and personal view of what it requires to be a teacher.

Teacher Academy is a selective senior level program for college bound students who plan to pursue education. Students gain teaching experience in “real” classroom settings through observation and participation in the educational process. Students can earn three credits toward their area high school diploma, and college credit from Delaware Area Career Center’s partner universities. Students from Teacher Academy are highly competitive for education programs because they can cite 550 hours of educational theory and fi eld experience in a variety of classroom settings. They also compile a Praxis III portfolio reflecting their overall experience which they can use later as a model for the portfolio they must create to earn licensure.
