Delaware Area Career Center’s CISCO Networking junior, Katie Robinson received a $350 check from the Jack Florance Memorial Fund Grant for Swimming Enrichment. She comes to our program from the Ohio School For The Blind. The grant came from the Community Foundation of Delaware County.

Robinson attends DACC’s Information Technology Academy and completes her academics at the Ohio School for the Blind. She is a very active student who not only does well in school, but also participates on three different sports teams: track, goalball and swimming. Goalball is a sport unique to the blind; it is a sport played with blindfolds and a ball with bells.

Robinson excels in swimming and was approached last year by The United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA). They asked her to represent the United States in the International Blind Sports Association’s World Youth and Student Games. After two and a half months of training, she traveled to Colorado Springs to compete against over twenty-five other countries.

She swam the 50 meter freestyle LC, the 100 meter freestyle LC, and the 200 meter freestyle LC and earned a gold medal in all three events.

She plans to travel to Colorado again in 2009 to compete, and will use her Jack Florance Memorial fund scholarship money to help her pay for that trip.
