Custom Databases - A Necessity in the Modern School Business

As technology evolves we become more dependent on data for our decision making processes. Commercial software packages are available to perform data services, each having its own cost of ownership. This cost involves installation, training and upkeep. Even after installation, many times we find that a product does not do everything that we need. You may find that you need to have more data fields, different reports, or need to look at data in a different format. The solution might be to have an in-house person trained that could create and maintain custom databases for the needs of your District.

The Delaware Area Career Center is located in Delaware, Ohio, which is the 14th fastest growing county in the United States. Our continuing growth and diverse population has required that our data systems evolve quickly to keep up with the needs. We have been using own Filemaker Pro™ custom data systems now for several years for student data, adult education registration, inventory, marketing and also our community resource (job search) center. We are currently developing in Filemaker Pro 9.0™ which provides a versatile solution that can be accessed across multiple workstations, multiple campuses and the web. We have provided custom data solutions to other Districts and county agencies.

• Filemaker Pro™ Developer Training for School Database Administrators

Train someone on your staff to write custom software in Filemaker Pro. Beginning in 2007, Delaware Area Career Center will offer a 4 day hands-on course that will start with the basics and teach the development of custom databases. It will include the creation of user interfaces, specialized reports, mailing labels, data exports and other features. Training exercises will cover common school data systems. This course will be offered at our North Campus at 1610 State Route 521, Delaware, Ohio. The cost of this 4 day course is $1195.00. This course is project based and students are encouraged to bring projects from their Districts to work on in class. This is the ideal course to jump start Filemaker Development in your District.
