A United Way of  Delaware County Agency

The Literacy Coalition of Delaware County offers the following free services:

  • Individual tutoring for adults who wish to learn to read or improve their literacy skills.
  • Individual tutoring for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). (As conversation partners)
  • Family literacy activities, such as The Summer Reading Program and The Ventures Program.
  • Partnership with ABLE/GED in helping adult learners improve basic skills.

Our History

The Literacy Coalition is a non-profit organization that was established in 1994 by representatives of local businesses, schools, churches, libraries and service providers. The Board of Directors and committee members meet regularly to plan and implement the goals of the Coalition. The activities of the Literacy Coalition are funded by United Way, the Ohio Department of Education and various grants and donations from individuals and businesses.

Our Mission

For the purpose of our mission, literacy is the ability to read, write and speak English, with the proficiency necessary to solve problems, to function on the job and in society, to achieve goals and to develop one's potential.

Our aim is to strengthen individuals, families and the workforce by providing the greatest possible promotion, coordination and resource support for all literacy efforts, including ESOL in Delaware County and the surrounding areas.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Literacy Coalition is always looking for volunteer tutors. Enrich your life by helping an adult learn to read.

Free training is available through a variety of workshops. Training is designed to meet the diverse needs of the adult learners we serve.

Trained tutors may work with students individually or in a classroom setting.

Interested volunteers may also choose to serve the Coalition by assisting with public relations or administrative activities.
