Burning and Learning

JesseI can't begin to explain how much fun it was to participate in burn week. It was all that I had been waiting for this past year. Everyone had a fair chance to do everything. Live Fire 1-9-12 (61)The first couple of days when we were burning it was just quick in and out not really any obstacles just straight in. The first days were just to get us used to fire and being around it.

What's New in Fire

JesseOver the last few weeks a lot has gone on in fire and with the ambassadors. To start in fire we got to get on the new and old roof simulators and practice ventilation. One thing that I learned from the experience was that using a chain saw on the roof is way harder than it looks but also fun. Secondly, we have been doing a lot with hoses. We have been learning about ways to advance them and how to effectively use them on a fire. Finally, we also got to go into the flashover simulator and see our first big fire. It got pretty hot on the inside and it was really cool to see the flames coming over your head and to see how the smoke fills in the room.

Preparing for Live Fire Training

JesseA while has passed since the last time that I wrote a post, but to start off, we have finally gotten back into a rhythm in fire class and I finally feel like I am back into school, meaning we are getting to spend more time working on our skills outdoors.

First, the Company Officers were selected and I was one of four who were chosen. We get to manage three to four people – I look over four. In this class, you can really get the experience of being a leader. But with leadership comes a lot of responsibility. The good thing about it, though, is that it is preparing me for the future to be ready to be put in charge.

Challenges in class - both academic and fun

JesseHey everyone,

We have just completed four chapters in the Fire Service Training class and have already taken our first module exam. I got a 94 on my exam, but it wasn't easy. For people who want to come to this class, you should know that it is not an easy class. It takes everything you have to study and prepare and you will not get through this class without reading the book.

Gearing up for outdoor fire training

JesseThe start to the year has been slow a little. We have not done much outside of the classroom yet but we are getting to it. Right now we are learning about emergency vehicle driving. We should be driving this week. It's nice to get back into class and meet up with all the friends I made last year. We are like a family here and you have to be if you are going to run into a fire with each other. I love this class and can't wait to see what it has in store for me this year.

Getting ready for senior year in Fire Service Training

JesseThe entire junior year last yer was a blast. It was so much more than what I expected and gave me so many opportunities to succeed. Something that was really cool that I got to do last year was to go to a CPR competition for SkillsUSA and a Firefighter Combat Challenge. These competitions were a lot of fun. In the CPR competition we took a trip to Buckeye Hills Career Center and stayed in a hotel overnight. If you place, you have the opportunity to go to the state competition and then eventually nationals, which is a very big achievement that I plan on doing this year.
