There are five parts to the test: Writing, Social Studies, Science, Literature & Arts, and Mathematics. To obtain the GED, a person must pass each section and have an average score, which is above passing. If one or more sections are not passed, a person can retake the test.
Retaking the test is risk-free. If a tester scores lower on a section, the highest score is considered. Therefore it is often to the advantage of the tester to retake a section that was passed to try to improve the average score.
While the test will still have five parts, there are some major changes. For example, the math test is given in two parts. Part I permits the use of a calculator that will be provided. The Social Studies test includes excerpts from important government documents such as the Declaration of Independence. Reading samples will reflect examples of documents that a person might encounter at work. And, a person must write an acceptable essay in order to obtain the GED. In the past, a less than adequate essay score was offset by higher scores on the question/answer part of the writing test.
The Delaware Area Career Center offers the GED exam in a one-day session one Saturday each month from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm.
The cost of the exam is $55, which can be waived by passing the official GED Practice Test. The pretest is half the length of the actual test and covers the same types of questions.
The Delaware Area Career Center Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program offers free classes to help individuals prepare for the exam and administers the pretest. ABLE classes are not limited to individuals without a diploma. Anyone interested in upgrading their academic skills can take advantage of the classes.
